Tutorial: Get Your IT Project Funded - 5
Steps to Improve the Odds
Step 2. Prepare a general outline organized
around the key points
Writing an outline
first will help you:
- logically
organize the points you want to make
- determine the
information you need to include
- avoid including
unnecessary verbiage that might obscure the message
A justification
outline, could include:
- Alignment With
Business Objective (or, Strategic Goal)
("This is what you want.")
- Cost Estimate
("This is what it will cost you to get
it.")
- Approach
("It will do what it is supposed to do.")
- Key Deliverables
and Schedule
("This is what you will get and when.")
- Project Control
Plan
("This is how you know you can trust me to
deliver the project result on time and within
budget.")
Now you know: 1) what
message to deliver to your audience, and 2) how you will
structure it. If your organization has a pre-defined format,
use it. You are likely to find that it requires most, if not
all, of this information; albeit, in different terms or order
of presentation.
Next we will discuss
the contents of the message.
