Why do organizations need to manage IT project / activity performance?
Although there are many reasons, we’ll just look at two for now:
- Business objectives must be achieved
- Achieving the objectives depends, in part, on successful IT projects (i.e., promised results are delivered on time and within budget)
If a key IT project doesn’t deliver the promised results when project planners said it would, the business objective that depends upon the IT may be jeopardized.
Senior management can’t afford to wait until the project’s deliverable due date to learn that it’s:
| 1) A disaster. | 2) Still in progress. | 3) Done. |

And, since even the largest organizations have a limited amount of money to spend on IT, senior management needs to be assured that both total and individual project / activity spending is on target.
