HOW IS IT USED?
There are at least four ways to use the "11
Steps" Guide:
- as a step-by-step procedure for writing a
complete justification,
- for instructions on how to write key
elements of a budget justification, e.g.,
writing meaningful business objectives,
- as a reference for reviewing and evaluating
justifications, and
- to help prepare answers for the inevitable
questions that will arise during major
budget meetings.
Each of the 11 Steps concentrates on one aspect
of a justification, e.g., how to write needs and
objectives statements. Here is how you might use it
to help write an objective statement:
- at the beginning of Step 4 you are told what
you are going to do and why; as well as how
much of your time to consider allocating,
- you then read succinct explanations of need
and objective statements - you can read
about how to write a need statement or skip
forward to objective statements,
- you read a definition of a business
objectives,
- next you learn how to get the information
you need,
- then you learn a generic structure for an
objective statement,
- the examples show you what they look like
and how they may be written,
- this is followed by a discussion of what to
do if you don't know the business objective,
- the characteristics of an effective
objective are outlined, and
- then you write the objective in the Budget
Justification Template (provided).
As you write your objective, you are likely to
have questions. You would turn to the end of the
chapter to find answers to the most frequently asked
questions about objectives.
